Standing near the first base line at Peekskill Stadium, Legislator George Oros (R-C/Cortlandt) reiterated his wholehearted support for the county’s Legacy program during a recent taping of his cable television show.
Oros, an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan, welcomed Peekskill Mayor John Testa to his program as he enthusiastically discussed how the county and the city joined forces a few years ago to build the impressive baseball field with the Hudson River in full view just beyond the left field bleachers.
“This, by far, is one of the best recreational fields we have built in cooperation with a municipality,” Oros said. “I look at it (legacy funds) not as an expenditure but as an investment. I’m very proud to support these types of things.”
Testa said Peekskill Stadium is widely used by Little Leagues and adults and was recently enhanced with additional seating, fencing and a raised scoreboard.
“It was a real team effort,” Testa said about the planning for the stadium. “It’s been a real community gathering place. Once you play here you want to come back.”
Started by County Executive Andrew Spano about six years ago, the Legacy program, where municipalities agree to take over county roadways in exchange for funding for recreational fields, has also helped with the creation of two all-purpose fields that will soon be built in Yorktown. Oros noted discussions are underway for another field in Peekskill.
Meanwhile, Oros and Testa reminded viewers about the annual Peekskill Celebration festivities, which will take place from August 3-5.
“It’s becoming almost a worldwide event,” Testa said. “People come from all over to see Peekskill.”
Peekskill Celebration features a wide array of events and attractions, including a Home Run Derby that will be held at Peekskill Stadium. For more information, visit www.peekskillcelebration.com.
