White Plains, NY – County Legislator George Oros (R—Cortlandt) announced that over $30,000.00 in funding from the County’s Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) was approved for the Town of Yorktown during a recent meeting of the County’s Board of Acquisition and Contract. The money will be used to purchase a new senior nutrition van.

“It is very important to provide services to members of the elderly community that will help them live independent, fulfilling and functional lives,” said Oros. “Transportation is a huge concern for seniors who have trouble driving or who do not drive at all. This van will make it easier for Yorktown’s seniors to visit their doctors, shop for food and get around the community on a daily basis.”

The existing van used by the elderly community in Yorktown recently fell into disrepair. The decision was made to purchase a completely new vehicle. The van that was selected contains seats for 12 passengers as well as space for 2 wheelchairs.

“I am delighted that our legislative district receives more than its fair share of these funds,” said Oros.

The total amount of the improvement grant is $31,250.00. This funding was made available through the CDBG program, a service that utilizes federal aid from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The County allocates these funds to a number of community improvement projects throughout Westchester.

Last week, Legislator Oros and Mayor John Testa of Peekskill joined Congresswoman Sue Kelly at a press conference to voice concern over proposed funding cuts by the Bush Administration to the CDBG program. Oros noted that Congresswoman Kelly prevailed three years ago and successfully got full CDBG funding restored.

“I am confident that Congresswoman Kelly will prevail again and all CDBG funding will be restored,” said Oros.
