Legislator Oros takes questions from audience at Cortlandt Colonial Restaurant. |
Legislator George Oros (R-C/Cortlandt) fielded an array of questions from a live audience during a recent taping of his cable television show (“County Legislator Update”) at the Cortlandt Colonial Restaurant in Cortlandt.
From Playland to taxes to sewage diversion, Oros, who represents District 1 and is running for re-election this fall, offered his insight and opinion on issues that mattered most to his constituents.
“One of the things I like is two-way communication. I like to know what’s on the minds of residents,” Oros said.
When questioned about the new Spray Park in Peekskill, Oros emphasized his district had received the highest percentage (21%) of federal Community Development Block Grant funding among the 17 county districts, which helps pay for such projects as the Spray Park, renovations to playgrounds on the Riverfront Green and in Montrose as well as sidewalk improvements.
“The credit for the great success rate this legislative district has rests with the people of Peekskill, Cortlandt and Yorktown and the local elected officials,” Oros said. “Their attention to detail and solid groundwork make it very easy for me to lobby the county and together we do a great job in bringing funds to the district.”
Oros noted his pride in being a fiscal watchdog. Last year, he explained the Republican caucus proposed $20M in cuts to the county budget which, if implemented, would have decreased taxes by four percent.
“These are not cuts that would have hurt anyone,” Oros said. “We stopped a number of bonds this year that could have been a boondoggle for the county.”
When asked about his success in halting the County’s plan to divert millions of gallons of sewage a day to the County’s treatment plant in Peekskill, Oros credited his “bi-partisan working relationships with colleagues.”
“I was successful in getting a grassroots effort to delay it and we forged a coalition of Republicans and Democrats so it never got the nine votes (on the county board) to get it through,” he said. “The coalition went beyond the Board of Legislators as we put together a broad based number of groups to fight this plan, a plan that did not merit compromise.”
Oros’ “County Legislative Update” show will air on Cablevision from September 19 to October 12. Check the local listings for local access programming for the dates and times in each municipality.
