County Legislator Jim Maisano is pleased to announce that at the January 18, 2007 meeting of the Westchester County Board of Acquisition and Contract a Community Development Block Grant of $40,000 for the Town of Pelham 9/11 Memorial was passed by unanimous vote.
Legislator Maisano stated, “Pelham was particularly hard hit by the tragedy of 9/11. It is proper that Westchester County should participate in the creation of the memorial. The memorial will be a special place for the people of Pelham to take a moment to think about the impact on the surviving families and the entire community from that terrible day. This grant is a token of the entire County’s commitment to remembering those we lost in Pelham on 9/11.”
Legislator Maisano applauded the commitment of the Pelham Town Board in making this memorial a reality and noted that Town Supervisor Joe Solimine demonstrated great energy and leadership in advocating for this funding to County officials. Legislator Maisano added, “Supervisor Solimine’s passion for this project was the spark that really made this funding happen, and I am happy to be supportive of his efforts.”
A memorial of benches and a curved wall inscribed with names of local victims is planned for Harmon Park. Construction began last fall, but, despite this county grant, more funding is needed. Tax deductible contributions may be made out to “The Town of Pelham 9/11 Memorial” and mailed to Pelham Town Hall; 34 Fifth Avenue; Pelham, New York 10803.
