Thomas J. Abinanti was first elected County Legislator for the 12th District in 1991.
Since his election to the County Board, Tom has held a number of important leadership positions. He presently serves as Majority Leader and chairs the Rules Committee. He previously served as Majority Leader for two terms when the Denocrats first assumed the majority on the Board -- the first Democratic Majority Leader in the history of the Westchester Legislature. He has also served as chair of various committees including the Committees on Rules, Legislation, Health, Community Affairs and Environment and Energy.
Tom brings to the Westchester Legislature extensive experience in the legislative process and the enforcement of local laws, as well as a deep concern for the quality of life in our community.
Previously, Tom served two terms as a Greenburgh Town Councilman. He was legislative counsel to a member of Congress and staff counsel to the New York State Assembly Speaker. He served as a prosecuting attorney for the Villages of Ardsley and Dobbs Ferry. He represented the Greenburgh Housing Authority and served as pro bono attorney for the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion. He was president of the Orchard Hill Civic Association and a member of the governing board of the Greenbugh Council of Civic Associations.
In over 30 years of public service and community activity, Tom has gained a full understanding of how government works and a broad knowledge of Greenburgh and Westchester.
Tom earned his B.A. in Political Science from Fordham College and his J.D. from New York University Law School. He lives with his wife and their children in the Orchard Hill section of Greenburgh, where he also has his own private law practice.
