News from Mike

Michael B. Kaplowitz has lived in Somers since 1989 and has represented the 4th District since 1998.

His education and expertise as an attorney and certified financial planner led to his appointment as Chair of the Budget & Appropriations Committee in 2003. During difficult 2002 budget discussions, Kaplowitz found a way to cut over $50 million in the proposed budget; in 2005, as Budget Chair, he was able to deliver a 0% tax levy increase.
Kaplowitz is committed to preserving the County’s last opportunities for open space and to conservation issues.

He is an aggressive supporter of tax fairness and has fought for and won relief for thousands of Northern Westchester homeowners who were paying sewer taxes despite never being hooked up to sewers. He has led the legislative effort to keep the sewage diversion/upgrade issue on the front burner. His concern for equity isn’t limited to lowering taxes and cutting costs. Kaplowitz is leading the fight to convert Indian Point to a non-nuclear facility.

Kaplowitz has a long history of involvement in a wide variety of community and civic organizations, including the Volunteer Center, the March of Dimes Walk America, the American Red Cross and the Partnership Fund for Aging Services.

Legislator Kaplowitz earned his B.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania and his J.D. from the Boston University School of Law. Mike and his wife Jayne have two daughters who attend the Somers Public Schools.

This petition has been established to create an outlet in which the taxpayers of Westchester County can voice their disapproval of the New York Senate's recent behavior and urge them to quit their petty games and get back to work for the residents of New York State.

Public confidence in the Westchester County Board of Legislators has recently begun to fade after a series of disclosures of poor fiscal oversight, a lack of internal controls and excessive spending. In order to restore public confidence, to recognize the extraordinarily difficult economic times and the positive role the County Board can play in providing critically important public services we must assure the public that the Board of Legislators is serious about reforming the way it conducts the public business.
