KAPLOWITZ SECURES $2.5 MILLION FOR
IMPROVEMENTS TO HILLTOP HANOVER FARM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 30, 2007

Westchester County Legislator Michael B. Kaplowitz (D-I-WF, Somers), chairman of the County Board’s Budget & Appropriations Committee, this week announced that Hilltop Hanover in Yorktown Heights will receive $2.5 million from the County to fund renovations needed at the 183-acre farm.

Kaplowitz led the Legislature in passing the measure at the Board of Legislators meeting earlier this week.

According to Kaplowitz, the monies will cover the cost of the partial reconstruction of the Hilltop Hanover Conversation and Natural Resource Center - including construction and renovations to buildings - infrastructure improvements, purchase of farm related equipment and related site work.

“Hilltop Hanover is one of Westchester’s greatest assets,” said Kaplowitz, who was instrumental in the County’s acquisition of the property in 2003. “It’s not only a farm, it’s an
environmental resource center. In addition to protecting the drinking water in the Croton Watershed, it’s a place where people come to hike and explore, a place where children can
come and learn about everything from farming to beekeeping. This is good investment of taxpayer dollars that will benefit all generations of Westchester residents.”

Kaplowitz, a current member and immediate past chair of the Legislature’s Environment & Energy Committee, thanked his legislative colleagues and the County Executive for their support of this project. He gave a special thanks to Hilltop Hanover’s new Farm Manager Lucille Munz, as well as the Watershed Agricultural Council and Cornell Cooperative Extension, who offers many programs and workshops at the farm.

“Now that the weather is warming up, I encourage people to pay a visit to Hilltop Hanover. I am confident they will be happy they did,” Kaplowitz said.
