Westchester County Legislator Michael B. Kaplowitz (D-I-WF, Somers), chairman of the County Board’s Budget & Appropriations Committee, is reminding residents in the northern part of the County that tomorrow, May 5th, from 1-3pm and Saturday, May 6th, from 9am – 3pm is a “Household Chemical Cleanup Day” at Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) State Park in Yorktown.
According to Kaplowitz, the immediate past chair of the Legislature’s Environment Committee, residents may bring properly labeled household chemicals such as antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, kerosene, metal polishes, pesticides and herbicides, septic tank and swimming pool cleaners, and wood preservatives.
“Residents are also encouraged to bring their cell phones, computer monitors and TVs because these items contain high levels of toxic chemicals,” said Kaplowitz. “It’s imperative to our community’s environmental health and well-being that we keep these types of harmful toxins out of the waste stream. Proper disposal of these items at Household Chemical Cleanup Day will accomplish that.”
Each household may deliver up to 10 car tires, and residents can exchange an old mercury thermometer for a new digital oral thermometer, free of charge, while supplies last.
Kaplowitz noted that because of the growing popularity of “cleanup days”, he was able to arrange an extra set of dates for northern Westchester residents.
“We will have the same schedule for Friday, October 27th and Saturday, October 28th, also at FDR State Park in Yorktown,” stated Kaplowitz.
