KAPLOWITZ TO NEW CASTLE RESIDENTS:“SHRED IT AND FORGET IT!”

Westchester County Legislator Michael B. Kaplowitz (D-I-WF, Somers), chairman of the County Board’s Budget & Appropriations Committee, will be bringing the County’s “Mobile Shredder” to the New Castle Recycling Center (located at 210 Hunts Lane in Chappaqua) this Friday, in order to give local residents an opportunity to have their unwanted personal papers destroyed, in an effort to prevent identity theft.
“Identity theft costs consumers millions of dollars a year,” said Kaplowitz. “One of the best ways to minimize the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft is to shred the documents you no longer need that have personal identifying information such as your name, address, phone number, credit card number or Social Security number.”
Kaplowitz noted that this free County service has been enormously popular and is particularly helpful to seniors.
According to Kaplowitz, the following guidelines will help residents prepare:
- The Shred Mobile is for residents only, to shred confidential papers.
- Paper generated by businesses, schools, institutions, government or municipal offices is not acceptable at these events. County staff will inspect all paper to be shredded and will reject any paper identified as commercial or institutional.
- Each resident may bring a maximum of 2 file boxes, approximately 10" by 12" by 15" in size.
- All paper must be freed of clips, bindings, folders and files.
- No bound or hardcover ledger books are allowed.
