County Legislator Martin Rogowsky (D,I,WF-Harrison) announced today that the county will continue to offer drivers of hybrid, electric and fuel efficient vehicles free parking at county-owned commuter lots in White Plains and North White Plains.
The County Board voted unanimously at its meeting last night to approve Rogowsky's proposal to extend the legislation that authorizes the incentive. The County Board extended the sunset provision from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009 and broadened the offer of the incentive to include any vehicle that achieves a United States EPA city fuel economy rating of 35 miles per gallon or more.
“I am pleased with the interest being shown in our offer of free parking," said Rogowsky. "By waiving the $75 monthly parking fee at the commuter lots, I am hoping to encourage more people to purchase a hybrid car. The waiver not only saves a commuter $900 a year but, by putting more fuel efficient cars on the road, we're helping to reduce greenhouse gases and our dependence on foreign oil."
County Legislator Thomas Abinanti (D,I,WF-Greenburgh), Chair of the County Board's Environment & Energy Committee, commented that the incentive meant that "being environmentally sound is also now financially sound."
