Legislator Judith MyersJudith A. Myers,

District 7
Majority Whip

After winning reelection in November, 2009, Legislator Judy Myers is continuing to work on the issues of particular import to 7th District residents – flood control, taxes and the environment chief among them – during her third term on the County Board.

As a 28-year Town of Mamaroneck resident, Myers’ work represents her deep understanding of the needs and expectations of district residents.

One of the hallmarks of Myers’ tenure as legislator was securing $4.5 million in county funds for area flood control projects, including important stormwater-related improvements in Rye and Mamaroneck. That accomplishment was part of Myers’ larger work on the county’s Flood Action Task Force, which was established after the devastating floods of 2007 to implement a five-year, $50 million flood mitigation effort.

Myers also has a keen interest in improving public health. In May, 2009, Westchester County became one of the few areas in the country requiring chain restaurants to post calorie count information under legislation championed by Myers.

As Chair of the County Board's Family, Health and Human Services Committee in 2006 and 2007, Myers tackled a wide range of critical issues — from childcare to AIDS to saving the Westchester Medical Center. She successfully increased access to quality childcare through a county scholarship program that is now in its 4th year.

Myers sits on the Westchester County Board of Health, insuring that the County Board and Health Department work together in their public health initiatives. She also is a member of the Joint Review Committee at the Westchester Medical Center, which reviews the fiscal and operational health of the medical center in Valhalla.

Myers is a vocal proponent of creating more open space in the southeastern part of the county by pushing forward the county’s plan to clean up and acquire David’s Island in New Rochelle as a county park. She helped shape Rye Playland’s new master plan and landscaping plans for the Jay Heritage Center in Rye. Myers also is working with local advocates to open the Westchester Children’s Museum at Playland.

To ease the playing field shortage in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, Myers successfully secured $1.5 million to help build a new athletic field that opened in 2008 in Larchmont’s Flint Park.

Also an advocate of greater regional planning, inter-municipal cooperation and open government, Myers has fought to keep taxes under control in the face of rising medical and retirement costs.

As the Majority Whip for the Democratic caucus, Myers serves on each of the legislature's major committees, including the Budget and Appropriations Committee, to carry out the majority caucus' legislative priorities.

Myers is a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Westchester-Putnam, and sits on on a number of community boards, including the Rye YMCA; the Mamaroneck CAP Center; and the Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound. She is an active member of the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Summit; RADAR; the League of Women Voters; and the Westchester Women’s Agenda.

She is married to Ira Schwartz, has two grown children and two golden retrievers.
