County Legislator Judy Myers (D,I,WF- Larchmont), Chair of the Family, Health and Human Services Committee, is making women’s health a priority for the Committee in 2007. She will announce this initiative at tomorrow’s Family, Health and Human Services Committee meeting, which will be an informational meeting with Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic and Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion on Emergency Contraception Pills.
Legislator Myers and the Committee plan to start this initiative with an informational campaign about the HPV vaccine Gardasil, including its availability, purpose, research, concerns, and the pros and cons to the vaccine.
“We want women and parents to have as much information as possible so they can make an educated decision about having their daughters vaccinated,” said Myers. “The Committee understands the importance of this vaccine for women’s health and the prevention of cervical cancer, but we also appreciate the concerns of the parents and residents in our County. By providing this information we can help parents decide what is best for their children.”
Throughout the year the Committee plans to tackle other areas of concern for women, including eating disorders, obesity, mental health, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS as the number of cases in women is on the rise in Westchester, and heart disease.
“I look forward to this new challenge for the Committee and becoming more proactive on women’s health,” said Myers. “I will be working hard this year to stay on top of these issues in addition to the other concerns of the Committee.”
