MelanieM@westchesterlegislators.com

Who: The Family, Health and Human Services Committee will hear from the Commissioner of Public Health, the Office for Women, the American Cancer Society, Planned Parenthood, POMCO, an OBGYN from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Chief of Pediatric Infectious Disease for the Maria Ferari Children’s Hospital.

What: An informational discussion on the Human Papilloma Virus that causes cervical cancer and Gardasil, the vaccine that prevents several strains of HPV.

When: Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 10:30 a.m.

Where: The Michaelian Office Building, 148 Martine Avenue, 8th floor Board of Legislators, in the McPoland Conference Room.

Why: There has been much debate nationwide about the Gardasil vaccine and the possibility of mandating it for girls age 9-12 since its FDA approval this year. While the discussion about mandating the vaccine goes on, there is little discussion about HPV, who has it, how it causes cervical cancer, and how the vaccine will affect not only families but the institutions that administer it. This meeting will provide further insight to the virus, the vaccine, and the options that Westchester residents have to consider.
