At a ceremony on Saturday, September 16th, the Board of Directors of the Union Child Day Care Center in Greenburgh unveiled a new sign with a new name that honors Westchester County Legislator Lois Bronz. “Renaming the Center the ‘Lois Bronz Children’s Center’ recognizes the crucial role Legislator Bronz has played in the Center’s success over the past forty years,” said Board President Barbara Holland. “Because her tremendous influence and support continues to help shape UCDCC as a critical resource for community families, this official change is most appropriate as we look toward the future.”
“I’m delighted by this honor and the beautiful sign on this special building,” said Legislator Bronz. “It has been my privilege through the years to witness the positive difference that sensitive, quality child care has made in the lives of our children and their young parents. Today’s event is wonderful and I’d like to think that my efforts and those of my colleagues and the community will make sure that many more happy and healthy children will pass through these doors. That thought is my real reward,” she said.
Lois has been a supporter of the Center for over thirty years as a ‘grandparent’ at the Center, a member of the Board of Directors and a member of the Advisory Board. She is best known for the annual Phon-a-thon she founded and has personally run since 1983 that has netted over $400,000 for the Center.
U.S. Representative Nita Lowey was the guest speaker at the ceremony and others giving remarks and presenting proclamations included State Senator Nicholas Spano, State Assembly Member George Latimer, County Executive Andrew Spano; and County Board of Legislators Chairman William Ryan. Other legislators participating were Vice-Chair Andrea Stewart-Cousins;Tom Abinanti and Judy Myers. Supervisor Paul Feiner led the Greenburgh delegation of Eddie Mae Barnes, Steven Bass and Francis Sheehan. Members of the Judiciary and many community leaders were also present. The Woodlands High School Jazz Band lent an air of celebration to the event and a child of the Center presented Legislator Bronz with a bouquet of flowers. An estimated 200 people were in attendance.
| To a standing ovation, Board Chairman William Ryan presented Legislator Lois Bronz with a framed copy of the board's unanimous resolution commending her for her years of volunteer work and the naming of the "Lois Bronz Children's Center."
