RYAN GETS $100,000 FOR SCARSDALE VILLAGE FOR RESTORATION OF HISTORIC WAYSIDE COTTAGE
Funds will enable critically needed upgrade of the Junior League of Central Westchester’s Headquarters
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 16, 2007
Thanks to the efforts of Bill Ryan (D-I-WF, White Plains), Chair of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, Scarsdale Village will get $100,000 to help refurbish the 300-year old Wayside Cottage which it owns. The funds will help pay for the Cottage’s exterior renovation, which had fallen into severe disrepair. Plans call for the the windows, doors, wood siding and trim, front porch, chimney, roof and gutters to be restored or replaced.
The restoration will directly benefit the Junior League of Central Westchester ((JLCW) which, since 1953, has leased the Cottage as its headquarters.
“Not only is the Cottage an important historic site but it’s the JLWC’s base of operations,“ said Ryan. “The League’s service area includes my legislative district of Scarsdale and White Plains so I’m very familiar with their many valuable programs and projects.”
According to Ryan, Junior League officials approached him after it appeared that the Village’s application for County funding to help in the restoration ran into difficulties. “My long-time respect and support for the League’s work caused me to intervene and go to bat for them,” said Ryan. “I saw the funding as a unique opportunity for the County to recognize the League’s long record of commitment to volunteerism and the well-being of our Westchester community. The renovation will ensure that Wayside Cottage will continue to serve not only history but the great organization that calls it home.”
Ryan said he was expediting the flow of funds and expected that the grant would be signed off on at the next Acquisition & Contract meeting on Thursday, January 18th.
