Wishnie: “We Need The Public To Help Thwart Possible Terrorism Attack"
Stresses Importance of Vigilance Over Next Four Months
Westchester County Legislator Richard G. Wishnie (D, I, WF- Briarcliff Manor) is calling on all citizens to be particularly alert during the next 90 days to assist law enforcement agencies in their efforts to prevent a terror attack prior to our national elections.
Wishnie’s call comes amid reports that the Federal Government is examining the possibility of postponing those elections should there be a disruptive terrorist incident.
“All of us need to become the extended eyes and ears of our law enforcement community as we head towards a critical window of opportunity for those that would do harm to our nation,” said Wishnie, who is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Legislators, and Chairman of the Board’s Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee. “Although significant resources have been amassed to prevent another 9/11 type incident, it is virtually impossible to provide the amount of resources that are needed to guarantee that any attack can be absolutely avoided.”
Wishnie added that at the conclusion of a recent meeting he attended with law enforcement officials from New York City, he wished the top official overseeing terror related operations for the City's Police Department “good luck” in his efforts.
“He responded that luck was exactly what we need,” Wishnie said. “It was a comment that underscores the difficult challenges we are facing. Our citizens need to understand how important a role they can play to help increase our chances of remaining safe and thwarting a terror plot.”
“People should feel comfortable in contacting the police immediately if they see or hear anything that would cause a concern on their part,” Wishnie stressed. “The police appreciate the help and will not be critical if the concern later proves to be unfounded. One alert person could mean the difference in saving many innocent lives and averting another terrible tragedy from occurring.”
