Board Authorizes Funds For 9/11 Memorial
The Board of Legislators has approved the issuance of $150,000 in bonds to construct a memorial to the 109 County residents who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Entitled “The Rising,” the memorial will be constructed at the Kensico Dam Plaza. Architect Frederic Schwartz designed “The Rising” with 109 intertwined rods of stainless steel. Constructed on a raised base and inscribed with the names of the 109 victims, the memorial will soar to 80 feet.
Legislators also approved renovation of the Kensico Dam reflecting pool and fountains in addition to landscaping and benches around the memorial itself.
Artists and family members participated in the selection of the design that was unveiled at the County Executive’s State of the County address in April. The Board is eager to move forward toward the completion of this soaring tribute to the strength and dignity of those Westchester County residents who tragically perished on September 11.
