Astorino to Kensico Little League: “Play Ball!”
Legislature approves measure that will turn old stump dump into new little league field
In a unanimous vote on Monday, the Westchester County Board of Legislators approved a measure that will turn a former wood dumping site on the Bronx River Reservation into a new little league field for county residents, culminating a year-long effort led by Mount Pleasant County Legislator Rob Astorino.
The dump site, located just north of Virginia Road off the Bronx River Parkway in Mount Pleasant, will be transformed by a $1.4 million construction project that will include a natural turf little league field complete with a drainage and irrigation system, bleachers, landscaping work and a parking lot for approximately 45 cars.
“For years, this site has been known by local residents as the ‘stump dump,’” said Astorino, Chairman of the legislature’s Committee on Parks and Recreation that first reviewed the project. “But now, thanks to a cooperative effort from my colleagues and the County Executive, it will soon be known as the new home of Kensico Little League, among others.”
According to the agreement passed by the legislature on Monday, the Town of Mount Pleasant will maintain and operate the field but must make it available for use to by county residents. In addition to general use, the town has already agreed to make the field the home of Kensico Little League.
The project is expected to go out to public bid in the coming months, with construction beginning in the early spring and lasting through the summer, weather permitting.
