Thanks to the efforts of County Legislator Judy Myers (D-Larchmont), Larchmont's Flint Park will soon be sporting a new all-weather soccer field. Myers succeeded in leading the County Board to unanimously approve $2.5 million in county funding for the project at its meeting today.

Today's approval culminates an effort Myers started not long after taking her seat on the County Board in 2005.

"Larchmont has needed additional fields for a long time," said Myers. "I know scheduling was even difficult back when my own children, now in their 20's, played. With the addition of this critically-needed soccer field that's playable year-round, the area's already strong soccer program will only get better."

Myers commended the efforts of local municipal officials and soccer parents who worked side-by-side with her to move the project forward throughout the application process

At the public hearing prior to the Board's vote, Liz Feld, the Mayor of Larchmont, said that the field was a dream come true for the area's many soccer enthusiasts. Valerie O’Keeffe, Mamaroneck Town Supervisor, also spoke enthusiastically in favor of the county's hands on approach to helping local municipalities afford improvements like the new Flint field. Jim Hanley spoke on behalf of “Fields for Kids,” a non-profit group area residents formed to raise funds for the project.

The $2.5 million grant comes from the Legacy Program, a county initiative started in 2001 to address the shortage of active recreation areas in Westchester. To date, $25 million has been invested in municipalities all over the county and has resulted in the development of over 20 athletic fields.
