White Plains, NY -- The playground at Willson's Woods Park will be getting an upgrade, Legislators Lyndon Williams (D - Mount Vernon) and David Tubiolo (R - Yonkers, Mount Vernon) announced.

The county will begin design work on a renovation of a playground in the park near Pelham Lake after the Board of Legislators unanimously approved $100,000 for design work on Monday.

It is part of a $530,000 renovation project for the 15-year-old playground and it comes as the county is looking at other possible ways to improve the Mount Vernon park, including investigation of improvements to parking and plans for what to do with a currently unused commercial property enclosed by the park.

Legislator Lyndon Williams (D – Mount Vernon) said, “Work to fix this playground is overdue. The current playground is 15 years old and the Parks Department tells us some of the providers of parts for the old play equipment are no longer in business so getting parts is difficult.   The new playground will be safer – with a new poured rubber surface replacing wood chips -- and it will be more accessible to children and family members with disabilities.  I whole-heartedly support these improvements and hope they’re the beginning of making Willson’s Woods an even better park for the people of Mount Vernon and the people of Westchester County.”

Legislator David Tubiolo (R – Mount Vernon, Yonkers) said, “Our children need access to green space and parks where they can play, be social and just be kids in a healthy, safe environment.  That's why I'm excited that the playground in this jewel of a park is going to be renovated. Open space is especially important in Mount Vernon, which has the highest population density in Westchester, nearly 17,000 people per square mile.  I full-heartedly support this project for present and future generations of children.”
