Statement from Democratic Caucus on Alleged Use of County Employees by County Executive Astorino to Aid Re-Election Effort

(WHITE PLAINS, NY) “Today’s news report about County Executive Astorino’s handpicked Deputy Commissioner of Social Services soliciting – nearly demanding - that County employees assist with partisan campaign work is utterly disgraceful. This is not the first time the Astorino camp has engaged in this type of behavior, though we’ll never know the details of one previous incident because the allegation led to an out-of-court settlement with a non-disclosure agreement.

“Furthermore, the call from Philippe Gille for ‘ballot protection’ in southwest Yonkers is a flat-out call for vote suppression and voter intimidation. Democratic poll watchers will be out in full force, and will be sure to report incidents of voter suppression to the State Attorney General’s Office.

“We ask for a full investigation of whether employees were illegally ordered to use personal time for any of the activities requested by Mr. Gille, the Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Social Services. We ask that Mr. Gille be placed on unpaid leave while these allegations are investigated; and if these allegations are proved to be true, we’ll call for the immediate resignation of Mr. Gille.

“Vote suppression has no place in Westchester. No matter your political affiliation, we all can agree fair elections are a bedrock of our democracy. This incident is deeply troubling must be addressed immediately.”
