White Plains, NY — Westchester County Legislator Terry Clements (D - Pelham, Pelham Manor, New Rochelle) says she opposes a plan to move the county’s Family Court in New Rochelle from its current location on North Avenue to the site of a former supermarket on Pelham Road.

The New Rochelle Family Court is one of three Westchester family courthouse locations, the others being in Yonkers and White Plains.

"As a former resident of Pelham Road, I understand residents' concerns about the proposed re-location of the court," Clements said. "The area around the former A&P site on Pelham Road that currently is under consideration is too congested to support another major institution, with the Isaac E. Young Middle School and the Trinity Elementary School nearby, and with nearby senior facilities like United Hebrew and Willow Towers, and the College of New Rochelle just a few blocks away."

Clements is calling for the consideration other possible locations.

"New Rochelle is the second largest city in Westchester and a Family Court should remain here. But its location should be more central and easier to get to by public transportation than the proposed site, so the court is more easily accessible to the residents of New Rochelle, Pelham, Pelham Manor, and Mount Vernon which the court serves," Clements said.

She added, "I will be lending my best efforts to help find suitable alternatives."
